Do I need a certified translation of Ukrainian ID before going for a PESEL number, if there is no other document with data transliteration?
There is no such obligation. The provisions of the law on assistance to Ukrainian citizens in connection with an armed conflict in the territory of this country refer to the law on the profession of sworn translator only in terms of the method of transliteration. In other words, this reference does not apply to the person who is going to transliterate, but to the rules for writing data from languages that do not use the Latin alphabet or use a different writing system. According to these regulations, transliteration is performed:
- on the basis of travel documents or their copies,
- in the absence of these documents, according to the spelling rules of the country where the translated document was drawn up.
Article 4 Paragraph 6 of the law on assistance to Ukrainian citizens in connection with an armed conflict in the territory of that state in connection with Article 14 (2) of the Act on the Profession of Sworn Translator.
It should be emphasized, however, that in practice offices sometimes require a sworn translation of identity documents that do not contain data transliteration.
